Modern search and rescue station for the Canadian Coast Guard officially opened in Port Weller, Ontario

June 11, 2026 - Port Weller, Ontario - Department of National Defence / Canadian Coast Guard

Today, the Canadian Coast Guard officially opened its new search and rescue station in Port Weller, Ontario. Strategically located on the south shore of Lake Ontario, this modern facility will enhance search and rescue operations in the region.

The Canadian Coast Guard plays a critical role in saving lives and assisting mariners in distress. Providing personnel with modern facilities and equipping them with the tools needed to carry out this essential, lifesaving work remains a top priority of the Government of Canada.

The new search and rescue station represents a $7.6 million investment. The project included the restoration and preservation of the 1931 former lighthouse keeper's dwelling, a recognized federal heritage building. Previously used as employee quarters, the restored structure has been integrated into the new facility and now serves as office space for this station.

The new facility includes a large workshop for vessel repairs, maintenance, and winter storage, along with on-site living accommodations for duty crews, including five bedrooms, a kitchen, spacious common areas, a laundry room, and an exercise area. A new "Ready Room" provides immediate access to search and rescue equipment, reducing emergency response time. Designed similarly to a fire station, this dedicated space supports the organized storage and rapid deployment of gear during emergencies.

Construction of the new station began in March 2022, with the facility ready for occupancy in October 2024.
