Offender sentenced in RCMP and CBSA cannabis exportation investigation

The Central Region Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), announced today the sentencing of Kyowa Shaw of Mississauga, Ontario following a joint investigation into the attempted exportation of 37 kg of dried cannabis.

On November 9, 2023, a CBSA Detector Dog team at Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport identified suspected cannabis in a traveller's two suitcases destined for Birmingham, England, via Paris. The individual and the drugs were transferred to the RCMP.

In a joint interview conducted by the CBSA and the RCMP, Shaw acknowledged being compensated $2,000 for his flight ticket and promised $10,000 upon delivery.

On May 8, 2025, Shaw pled guilty to possession of cannabis for exportation and possession of over 30 g of dried cannabis.

On September 11, 2025, he received an 18-month conditional sentence order.
